Polar Capital is an investment management company based out of London. The company was established in 2001 and operates as a “specialist investment management company offering professional and institutional investors a range of fundamentally research-driven funds diversified by asset class, geographical and sectoral specializations.” Polar Capital conducts its business as a subsidiary of its holding company Polar Capital Holdings PLC, which was listed in London on the Alternative Investment Market in 2007. The company has grown from its inception to now have locations in Tokyo, Connecticut, Jersey, and Geneva. Polar Capital now has 11 investment teams that manage 24 funds, employing over a hundred people of which approximately half are investment professionals. The company invests most heavily in the information technology sector, which alone makes up over a third of its total asset allocations, and also invests in the health care, finance, and consumer discretionary sectors, among others to a lesser degree, in order of decreasing allocation. Polar Capital currently holds over $12.8 billion in total assets under management spread across 29 accounts, all of which are discretionary. Both of the company’s total number of accounts held and total assets under management have been increasing in recent years with its total assets under management growing significantly from $1.5 billion back in 2010 to well over 8 times that amount today. Polar Capital mainly caters to pooled investment vehicles, which alone makes up over three quarters of its client base, and also provides its services to corporations and other businesses. The company’s key corporate investors are Caledonia Investments plc and XL Group plc. Polar Capital currently offers a wide variety of funds under the Polar Capital family of funds including its Asian Financials, Biotechnology, Emerging Markets Income, European Income, Financial Opportunities, Global Alpha, Healthcare Blue Chip, UK Absolute Equity, and Global Alpha funds, among many others.
